Monthly Tip : January
I see too many golfers trying to hit the ball farther by taking too big a backswing. This usually causes your lower body to become over active. Your knees start going every which way; right knee straightens, left knee looks like an Elvis move. By keeping the lower body quiet you will be able to get the club back in a better position. You probably already knew your swing was too long and tried everything from shortening the swing to slowing it down, but a quiet lower body should do the trick. Make sure to turn your shoulders back trying to keep your left knee pointing near the ball. If your left knee points back past the right leg you have moved too far. Keep practicing this without the ball and preferably in front of a mirror. It will feel different, but keep doing it. Even try to make your takeaway with your eyes closed, then open them at the top of your backswing to see how much movement you really have. If you do this drill I promise after the winter thaw your ball striking will improve.
