SYLVIA HANKS, HR LEADER FOR SANDESTIN GOLF AND BEACH RESORT,
EARNS 2007 WORKFORCE REVOLUTIONARY AWARD

Released on Tuesday, September 11,2007

Destin, Fla. (Sept. 11, 2007) –   Sylvia Hanks, vice president of human resources at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort and Intrawest Hospitality Management (IHM), was recognized by the Okaloosa County School Board and Workforce Development Board of Okaloosa and Walton Counties with the 2007 Workforce Revolutionary Award. The award celebrates Hanks’ early vision and long-standing commitment to career education and workforce development, as well as her role in creating the first career academy in the region, Sandestin Academy.

Built on a partnership between Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort and Walton County Schools, the Sandestin Academy offered high school students the opportunity to explore career possibilities in the hospitality industry. In addition to a rigorous academic curriculum, participating students would gather on-site work experience at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Sandestin Academy allowed students to gain the knowledge, skills and work experience necessary for entry into a successful career.

The Sandestin Academy has received numerous state level awards for its originality, creativity and effective delivery of career education and was also recognized as one of the earliest “School to Work” successes. Hanks has served as a resource for the design and implementation of other career academies throughout Florida.

“I am pleased to see the efforts of Sylvia Hanks recognized with this appropriately titled award,” said Rob Babcock, vice president and general manager of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. “Her efforts have contributed directly to the beginning of a revolution in career education. She is an expert and pioneer in her field.”

Hanks is a 28-year veteran of the human resources field, 23 of which were spent at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Hanks is responsible for staffing, training and employee relations for the resort’s more than 1500 staff and also oversees all human resources functions for IHM properties world wide.

Hanks was named the Human Resource Executive of the Year for the State of Florida in 1993 and was awarded the Florida Hotel and Motel Association Paul Brown Award in 1995 for her contribution to hospitality education.

In addition to the Sandestin Academy, Hanks has spearheaded many noteworthy projects such as employee housing, adult basic education and the e-Cornell learning system.

Hanks has served on the Walton County Chamber Board of Directors and the United Way Board of Directors and is currently the Chair of the local Workforce Development Board of Okaloosa and Walton Counties.
