Dock lines and Deadlines: My Journey at Baytowne Marina
I first stepped foot on this marina over 20 years ago as a vendor performing hull cleanings. Over time, I transitioned into a subcontractor role, handling nearly every maintenance task imaginable for more than a decade. I became known as the guy with a tool belt, a truck full of parts, and an unwavering commitment to doing things right the first time.
Back then, if something broke, leaked, cracked, or got stuck I was called upon.
Today, I operate the day-to-day business. But in many ways, not much has changed. I still show up every day with the same pride in what I do. Always at the ready, it doesn’t matter what the task, solve the problem, led by example, and keep pushing this marina forward.

The Early Years: Behind the Boards and Beneath the Docks
For over 10 years, I worked behind the scenes as a subcontractor, handling nearly every maintenance task you can imagine. I’ve replaced dock boards one plank at a time under the blistering Florida sun. I’ve chased down under-dock water leaks after storms. I’ve repaired pump-out systems knee-deep in the job no one else wanted. If a golf cart stopped working, I was the one to get it back on the dock. If an issue arises, I was there with my tools in hand before most people finished their coffee.
I didn’t just work here, I learned here. I became the one person who knew Baytowne Marina inside and out. Every bolt. Every board. Every water valve. I was proud of that. I still am.
During the marina's expansion, I was there in the trenches, helping shape the layout, installing systems, and ensuring our infrastructure could keep up with our growing community. While the titles on the org chart changed, the one constant remained. Me. I had a hand in all thing’s marina.

Stepping Into Leadership
Eventually, I transitioned from subcontractor to Marina Manager but I brought every bit of that hands-on experience with me. Unlike most who learn the ropes from a binder or training video, I already knew every slip number, where the hidden valves were, the boaters by name, how the marina operated, and what improvements were needed.
I would like to think I didn’t just inherit this role, I earned it by building trust, mastering every system, and proving time and again that I could be counted on to solve problems others couldn’t even see coming.
Now, as the Marina Manager of Baytowne Marina at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, I see things from a broader perspective but I’ve never lost that boots-on-the-dock mindset.
The Team, The Culture, The Standard
I believe leadership starts with showing up, listening, and working alongside your team. We’ve built a culture that blends professionalism with personality. We don’t just operate a marina—we create a memorable experience for our guests, backed by a crew of hard-working, quick-thinking, team oriented, can-do people. The fabric of a family.
I take pride in working alongside a team that sees no task as too small and no challenge as too big. I hold high standards, but I try to meet them with equal parts support and effort. I aim to lead by example—and when needed, I’m not above rolling up my sleeves and getting dirty. Right alongside my team.

Daily Challenges to Marlin Madness
Every marina has its share of daily challenges—whether it's managing people, handling maintenance issues, navigating weather delays, or responding to unexpected situations on the docks. A safe harbor for all. From leaky hoses to electrical faults, mis-parked golf carts to communication hiccups, no two days are ever the same. But that's part of what makes this job so rewarding. It keeps us on our toes, demands quick thinking, and gives our team a chance to problem-solve, adapt, and grow stronger with every obstacle we face. It builds a bond of unity and delivers resolve.
Then there’s the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic… the adrenaline-fueled, sleep-depriving, fast and fluid pace event of the year. The stakes are high, the energy is electric, and everything from ice delivery, golf carts on the go, to the final weigh-in, protocol has to run like clockwork. It’s exhausting and exhilarating—and it proves why having a team that trusts each other acting in unity like a family in tow.

Constant Innovation, Never Complacent
While the foundation of this marina has always been strong, I’m focused on what’s next. Over the past year, we’ve worked diligently to enhance both the appearance and the reputation of Baytowne Marina. Every decision made has been driven by a commitment to continuous improvement and a desire to provide a memorable experience that delivers generational guest.
When guests depart with a smile—and leave a 5-star review mentioning our staff by name, I know we’re doing something right.
Lessons From the Water’s Edge
Over my decades here, I’ve learned some lessons worth passing on:
- Knowledge is earned, not assumed. I didn’t become the “go-to” guy overnight—it took years of listening, learning, and doing.
- No task is beneath you. From sweeping the dock to rebuilding the pump-out system, it all matters.
- You have to care more than anyone else. And I do. Every board, every boat, every guest.
- You lead by example. Whether you’re in boots or staff meetings, your team will match your energy.
- Humor helps. Especially when the pipe bursts… again.

Looking Ahead
I’m as dedicated to Baytowne Marina now as I was the first day I changed out a busted dock board on A Dock. My goals today go beyond repairs, they’re about vision. I want this marina to remain a place where guests feel welcome, where the staff feels proud, and where the legacy of hard work and commitment continues.
Final Thoughts
People often ask, “What’s it like running a marina?” The truth is, I’ve been running this place long before my title ever said so. I’ve hauled, hammered, fixed, flipped, and bleed for every improvement. And even now, with a radio in hand and a full inbox of logistics to handle, I still look around with the same pride I had 20 years ago.
This marina isn’t just my workplace, it’s my legacy. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
