At Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort and The Agency NWFL Beaches, we often talk about how community, service, and relationships are what truly set us apart. Recently, one of our long-time property owners, Steve Schaeffer, shared an experience that perfectly captures all of those values—reminding us that the magic of this place isn’t just in the views, but in the people.
Steve, who owns two beautiful Grand Sandestin units 2600 and 2806 recently encountered a late-night HVAC issue with one of his properties. With guests checking in that same day, he reached out to the Sandestin maintenance team a bit uncertain about what to expect. But what followed was nothing short of exceptional.

Within 10 minutes of his call, Gene Buckley, Engineering Technician at Sandestin since June 2018, was at the door ready to help. Not only did Gene quickly walk Steve through how to reset the HVAC system and explain how the HALO system operates, he stayed to make sure everything was functioning properly—and took the time to have a meaningful conversation.
Gene shared his pride in working at Sandestin, a place he’s called home for over eight years. He reflected on how the Becnel’s leadership during the challenges of COVID-19 created a culture of loyalty and support, and even reminisced about deer hunting right where the Grand now stands. That kind of history and heart isn’t something you can build overnight—it’s something that’s lived and shared.
As Steve later wrote:
“That kind of loyalty and pride in your work is rare—and it reminded me that what really makes Sandestin special isn’t just the resort, it’s the people.”

Recent renovation of one of Mr. Schaeffer’s units was performed by Sandestin’s preferred vendor, Tammy Matthews interiors. Talk about a full service and full circle moment.
